Our Mission: To collect, preserve, and interpret the heritage of Fillmore County.

History of the History Center

The Fillmore County Historical Society was formed in 1934 as an independent non-profit organization.  In the late 1940s our original museum was located in the Mills home in Preston.  As our collection grew, we transferred location several times until coming to roost in the basement of the courthouse for many years. Since 1987, the Fillmore County Historical Society Museum and Library have been housed in the former Fountain Elementary school. The FCHS museum traces the cultural history of Fillmore county as one of Minnesota’s first settled areas.

Stop in to visit us at our museum complex which has grown to consist of a main exhibit arena with two connected pole buildings, the Pleasant Dale-Watson Schoolhouse, one of southern Minnesota’s largest collection of antique agricultural equipment, and the world-famous Pietenpol experimental airplanes. The Almeda and Emery Eickoff Genealogy Library is a treasure trove of family research resources, many of which have been indexed by surname. Our genealogy and research center is one of the best organized and extensive local history libraries in the State of Minnesota.

Due to our proximity to the Root River State Bike Trail we are even home to the Trail Towns Bike Share program!

There's something for everyone at the History Center!
